Alexandra Chandler Western Engineering Competition 2013 juniors clothing stores
The Western Engineering Competition is an annual event where undergraduate engineers put their skills to the test in a variety of engineering related competitions. The winners from each competition are sent to the Ontario Engineering Competition where they represent Western against other engineering schools in Ontario. This year we ran four competitions: Consulting Engineering - teams of four had four hours to come up with a solution for converting Dundas street in London to a pedestrian street. This competition was sponsored by London Consulting Engineers of Ontario (LCEO). They sponsored us with engineering and city planning judges from the city of London and other consulting firms. A few Alumni currently working in the consulting field wrote the competition description and guidelines. Winners: 1st - Daniel Rozhko, Michelle Lo, Niklas Lubczynski, Michael Gencarelli 2nd - Danielle Aucoin, Chandler Button, Laura Perry, Nicholas Zeeb 3rd - Jiemi Gao, Kevin Zhou Jr. Design - this competition is limited to undergraduate engineers in first or second year. Teams of four had four hours to design and build a prototype vehicle to traverse a pre-built set of terrains. They designed for the situation of a military vehicle safely transporting injured soldiers out of a combat zone. This was simulated by sand, hills, rocks, mud and a swamp. The teams also had to retain as much liquid as possible when traversing the track to prove that the ride wouldn't be too rough for injured soldiers. Winners: 1st - Stuart Ainslie, Kevin Vitone, Adam Wiggers, Michael Stephen 2nd - Alexandra Huynh Do, Mitch Dooreleyers, Ben Vyn, Andrew Simpson 3rd - Brandon Tartaglia, Matt Palys, Jesse Borges, Patrick Mayne Sr. Design - teams of four undergraduate engineers had to solve the problem of transporting clean water to a factory. The teams had the option of using a pre-existing pump at a nearby dirty lake and cleaning the water or pumping the water from a clean lake over the top of a mountain. Teams were judged on how automated the process was (limited touching from the competitors), the PH of their water sample and how clear the water appeared visually. Winners: 1st - Brandon Edmonds, Dave Tripp, Danny Horodniczy, Greg Thomas 2nd - Matt Brezina, Eric Brooker, Bennet Heidenreich, Stefan Glibetic 3rd - Amanda Skof, Adam Mahoney, Marc Sinclair, Nicole Segal Innovative Design - this year the team that will represent Western at OEC designed and built a system that tracks the eye movements of patients in a hospital so they can type on screen based on where they are looking and a blink for a selection. This system is a modern version of what Steven Hawkings uses to communicate but it is designed to be disposable (and recyclable) so that hospitals can easily communicated with sedated patients and preserve a sterile environment.
